Australian Group Races are the highest class of thoroughbred race in Australian racing. The most recognised group races in Australia are the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Golden slipper and WS Cox Plate, which are all Group 1 races.

Group races total over 540+ races each year which works out around 2-3% of total races held each season in Australia.

Group races are divided into 4 categories;
Group 1 - at least $250,000 prizemoney - 60+ races per season
Group 2 - at least $125,000 prizemoney - 80+ races per season
Group 3 - at least $75,000 prizemoney - 110+ races per season
Listed - at least $50,000 prizemoney - 280+ races per season

The Australian horse racing season runs from August to July each year and we have listed all the Group 1 and Group 2 races on the racing calendar.

The Emirates Stakes is a Victoria Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horserace held as part of the Melbourne Cup Carnival in early November. The race is over 1600 metres and is held at Flemington Racecourse.

Emirates Stakes day is held on the last day of the four day Flemington Spring racing carnival which is a Saturday and ends Group 1 racing for the spring carnival. The Emirates Stakes has had a huge increase in prizemoney in recent times and is now worth over one million dollars making it one of the richest mile events for the season.

Races like the Chatham Stakes on Derby day, Crystal Mile on Cox Plate day and the Toorak Handicap on Caulfield Guineas day are generally good guides to this race.

The Emirates Stakes has undergone plenty of name changes starting with the first change in 1960 from the Cantala Stakes to the George Adams Handicap. In 1984, it was changed to the Ampol Stakes then in 1989 it became the Honda Stakes. In 1993, the event became known as the Nissan Stakes however only 3 years later it was changed to the Chrysler Stakes until 1997. Up until 1895, the event was raced at 9 furlongs however this was then decreased to 8 furlongs. Eventually in 1975, the race became a 1600m event.
